Piano Performance and Pedagogy

Melissa Coppola leads a versatile career as a soloist, collaborative pianist, recording artist, as well as frontwoman and drummer of the rock duo, Junglefowl. She is a recipient of multiple awards for her interdisciplinary concert series [perspective], that re-envisions the traditional piano recital as an immersive multi-sensory experience. Coppola is also a co-founder and former executive director of Girls Rock Detroit, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering creative expression, positive self-esteem, and community awareness for girls, gender-expansive, and transgender youth through music education and performance. She worked as a program assistant for the SMTD EXCEL Lab from 2017 to 2021, serving as a co-host on the EXCELcast series, mentoring students, and supporting programming such as the Young Creatives Book Club, Progressive Programming Open Lab series, and EXCEL Career Expo.
